3 Easiest Emergency Carpet Stain Removers
Most people who host parties at home know how stressful cleaning up can be. It can be more frustrating when you see food and drink spilled on the floor. Thankfully, you don’t have to worry about it anymore because three of the most effective stain removers are readily available in your kitchen.
Water
Donna Smallin Kuper, clean fiend, organizational guru, and author of Clear the Clutter, Find Happiness, says you can’t beat water when it comes to naturally dissolving stains from carpets. Employ it as your first and best offense when washing out stains. Absorb as much of the stain as possible with white towels, then blot with water-dampened white cloths until the stain is gone. “I actually used water to clean a 6-foot-square area of off-white Berber carpet that was smothered in chocolate, Clif Bars, and Fig Newtons that my dog got into,” Kuper says. “It took about an hour and a lot of patient blotting, but the carpet was good as new when I was done!” Source: BHG
Salt
Use a sprinkle of salt to boost the power of another homemade carpet stain remover:
- Don’t panic if you spill red wine on your white carpet. While the red wine is still wet, pour some white wine on it to dilute the color. Then clean the spot with a sponge and cold water. Sprinkle the area with salt and wait about 10 minutes. Now vacuum up the whole mess.
- For greasy food stains on carpet, mix up 1 part salt to 4 parts rubbing alcohol and rub it hard on the grease stain, being careful to rub in the direction of the rug’s natural nap.
- Ketchup spill on your carpet? Act fast because once this one dries, it will be nearly impossible to get out. Sprinkle salt over the spill, let sit for a few minutes, and vacuum. Sponge up any residue and continue salting and vacuuming until the stain is completely gone. Source:RD
Vinegar and Baking Soda
We already know that vinegar is a great weapon for fighting carpet stains, but adding a little baking soda can take it to another level.
Household blog One Good Thing by Jillee suggests soaking the stain with vinegar, then sprinkling in a little bit of baking soda. The order is important here; pour vinegar on a pile of baking soda, and you have the makings of a carpet volcano. Once you have a bubbling mound of baking soda on the floor, just wait a few moments for it to absorb the stain, then wipe and vacuum it up. Source: LifeHacker
